Med Disp weights?

Can anyone explain the Med disp weight system. Why 2.83 gram and not 3.5, why 5.66 and not 7.
Why not the standard 3.5g for 1/8
Why not 7g for a 1/4 and 14g for a half 28g for an oz.
I just don't get it.
